25 February 2022 - The lack of clarity, coordination and guidance to pilots about overflying and flying to Ukraine at times of a developing serious military conflict is a great concern. Despite two disastrous events in the recent past – the MH17 and PS752 – pilots (and airline passengers) were still facing diverging airline decisions, and reliance on the decision-making capabilities of the conflict-stressed state to restrict its airspace. The designated aim of the European States to improve the risk assessment by better information exchange and coordinating the required measures has been unsuccessful.

10 February 2022 - Tim Perry, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) Canada, issued the following statement of support today after the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) declared a national boycott of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). “On behalf of the 6,000 ALPA Canada members, we stand unwaveringly behind the SAS pilots. Due to the pandemic, SAS management laid off 560 pilots [40 percent of the workforce]. Last September, the airline management informed its remaining employees that new companies were being established [“SAS Connect” and “SAS Link”].

Living the dream – Recommandations to aspiring pilots
The career as an airline pilot still attracts a large number of applicants every year. Aside from free training (public school or training sponsored and paid for by the future employer), aspiring pilots go into massive debt to train despite the very uncertain outlook. While there are now a large number of pilots on the European market, many airlines are taking advantage of this to offer increasingly precarious employment contracts:
